Infinite Campus - Meet your new Apps

Subject: Delay...Campus Student and Campus Parent Apps

Thank you for your interest in the new Campus Student and Campus Parent apps for iOS and Android. The new apps will not be available today (Monday, September 17) as planned. We regret this delay and apologize if you are fielding inquiries from parents and students who desire the apps.

Two issues were identified this weekend that would have caused your parents and students to have a poor experience if they came across them. Both issues have been addressed and new versions of the apps are in the release process..

When will the new apps be available?

We expect the new apps to be available in the app stores later this week. Both the Apple App Store and Google Play have release processes outside our control. As soon as the stores complete their release processes, the new apps will appear for download by your students and parents. At that time, we will email you and make an announcement on Campus Community.

Dayton Independent Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018 due to a lack of sufficient substitute teachers.

Stay Engaged.

Teachers Holding Walk-In before School, Friday March 30th

Show your love for your public school! This Friday, March 30th, Dayton Independent Schools teachers will be holding a walk-in before school to rally support for public education in Kentucky.

What is a walk-in? A walk-in is a peaceful gathering where people can express their ideas and concerns to their community. A walk-in allows teachers and staff to show support for public education without interrupting your students’ instruction.

Current budget proposals in the Kentucky legislature could have serious negative effects on YOUR school and YOUR students. Programs and staff will likely be cut if these proposals go through.

We are asking parents, students, and community members to join us if they would like to express their support for public education. We will meet outside both Lincoln Elementary and Dayton High School this Friday morning at 7:20am. We hope to line Greendevil Lane all the way from Lincoln to Dayton High School. Please wear RED to show support for public education, and you are welcome to bring a simple poster or sign (I love my public school, Honk if you support public ed, etc.). Please consider joining us and standing in solidarity as we fight for our schools and our students!

You can also voice your concerns to your legislators by calling the legislative message line at 800-372-7181.

NKCES and Northern Ky Superintendents, Op-Ed

The included Op-Ed was written collaboratively, and printed in Sunday’s Enquirer, by the 17 Northern Kentucky School Superintendents and the Executive Director of NKCES to support our great public schools in Kentucky.

Important Notice Regarding Solar Eclipse and Extended School Day...Dismissal at 3:50 PM on Monday, August 21

As many of you know, next Monday, August 21, we will experience a near total solar eclipse from approximately 1:00-4:00 pm. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun. While we are not located in the area for a total eclipse, we will still be able to view 93% of totality.
This will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students as the last solar eclipse occurred in the USA in 1918. I know many of our schools have already planned special activities or lessons for this day to accompany the event. While the event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety. Our district has purchased NASA-approved, ISO-certified viewing glasses for all students and staff members to help us navigate this day safely. Like any other day, looking directly into the sun without proper protection can damage eye tissue; this becomes much more of a risk when looking at the sky to see an eclipse. Normally, our bodies instinctively protect us from harm via reflexive squinting/blinking and constriction of our pupils in response to the brightness of the sun. During an eclipse, however, the shadow created makes it dark enough to fool our body's natural defense mechanisms, and partial but permanent eye damage may occur without proper eyewear for viewing the eclipse. The risk of eye damage is present for the entire eclipse....

The Dayton Family Resource Center and Youth Services Center are hosting a district wide Readifest at Lincoln on August 9th from 1-3 p.m. Community agencies will be in attendance providing information on their resources. Students will receive school supplies, clothing, haircut coupons, and schedules (grades 8-12).

Chess Team at Queen City Classic

The Lincoln Elementary Chess Team (33 students participated) enjoyed a great day on Saturday.  Competing against many chess teams from around the USA the Lincoln teams fared very well.

Lincoln’s 2nd grade team finished third overall, the 3rd grade team finished fourth overall and the 4th grade team finished sixth overall.  Also, several players were awarded individual trophies.

This was Lincoln’s second year competing.  The students who attended last year finished higher in the standings than they did the previous year.  There is no doubt that the students are making continuous progress.

Campus Portals - Back Online

Access to the Parent/Student and Teacher Portals from home had to be turned off to protect the Infinite Campus Student Information System. No student data was compromised during the weeklong cyber attacks the KETS Network and the Campus Portals endured.

Staff from the Commonwealth Office of Technology, KDE Technology Team, AT&T, and Infinite Campus, Inc. worked tirelessly to keep the networks secured.  Keeping the portals offline until security measures were put into place had to be made.

As of this evening, security measures have been put in place to protect these networks from these types of attacks. The Teacher and Parent/Student Portals are now available from home.

5th Grade Students preform Living Museum

Fifth Grade Students have spent the last few weeks preparing to bring a variety of historical characters to life.  They worked both in and out of school to research a famous character from United States history.  They learned all they could about this character’s life and impact on the history of the United States.  Then each student composed a speech from the historical figures point of view.  They designed a visual presentation, prepared costumes, rehearsed, and finally spent the day bringing these characters to life.

The Dayton Independent School District implements new school safety procedures

The Dayton Independent School District in partnership with the Dayton Police Department has implemented a new school safety procedure.  The Dayton Police Department provided the Dayton Independent School District with staff, visitor, and substitute teacher passes at no cost to the school district. The Dayton Police Department photographed and printed the ID badges for every faculty member, staff member, custodian, and administrator.  These ID’s distinguish between district employees, substitute teachers, and visitors.  The new badges are providing an increased secure building for the students and staff in the Dayton Independent School District which aligning with the new safe school procedures.

Any visitor coming into the buildings will be required to check in at the front office and provide a photo ID or driver’s license in order to be provided with a visitors pass.  This ID will be kept in a secure location in the front office which will clearly identify any visitor in the building. Once the visitor returns to the front office and returns the visitors pass, their ID is returned.

The Dayton Independent School District knows this may be an inconvenience, however, the safety of our students and staff is our main priority.

New Test Scores Are In!
In 2009, Kentucky legislators passed Senate Bill 1, which required many changes in the state’s public education system. It included a call for new, more rigorous academic standards and new state tests based on those standards. Senate Bill 1 also called for a more balanced assessment and accountability system focused on student readiness for life after high school.

Special Thank You from Superintendent Brewer
It is amazing what can be accomplished when a group of people come together to move a project forward.   A perfect example of this is what occurred on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.  During these two days over 90 students, parents, teachers, administrators, alumni, and community members came together to prep and paint Davis Stadium.  We want to spotlight the efforts of Mr. Tim Chenot, Lincoln Elementary teacher and Youth Football League Director, and Mr. Ron Kinmon, Director of Pupil Personnel, for their efforts in organizing this event.  We also want to thank the students, including members of both the football and soccer teams, for their efforts to support this project.   This was truly a TEAM effort and we thank everyone for contributions, both large and small, of their time and talent.  A good deal of the funds for this project came from the late Mr. Russ Brewer who left a donation that was designated for stadium improvements at Davis Field.  We want to extend a special thanks to Mr. Russ Brewer and his family for their amazing contribution to this project.

I have lived in Dayton all of my life and a proud DHS graduate.  I look forward to working with the school district, along with the community in order to continue to grow our schools.    My goal is to provide a great place for our kids to come, making sure they have the tools they will need to be prepared for college and for life.

The theme was inspired by the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, who selected Lincoln Elementary School as the recipient of the mural.

The mural depicts an elephant standing a top a stack of books, a child reading his favorite book, a happy clown painting the wall, the ring master riding in on his horse, and next to a stack of books; the Lincoln Little Devils pop-up book.

Our third graders even had their picture taken to be put on display as the first class to ever visit it.  What a great learning experience!

Kroger Plus Card - Fundraiser

Kroger Plus Card, Fundraiser Update

The Kroger Company discontinued the Kroger Reloadable Gift Cards as a fundraiser.  We had used these cards for three years and with only a handful of people using them on a regular basis, we raised about $8,000.00.  That money was used to replace the graduate pictures in the outer hallway of the high school. The pictures were taken down so we could replace the framework and picture frames so all would match.   We purchased enough frames for all the graduates plus another 20 years.

Health Point School Based Health Center Sees First Patient!

Health Point opens school-based health center at Lincoln Elementary.

Health Point Family Care of Northern Kentucky opened a school-based health center April 10 at Lincoln Elementary School in the Dayton Independent Schools.  The health center also will be available to Dayton High School students.

The Lincoln Health Center will be open on Thursdays, staffed by Health Point nurse practitioner Joanie Combs.  Services include physical exams, immunizations, and diagnosis and treatment of illness.  Parents must enroll their children in the school-based health center before services can be provided.

School-based health centers provide many advantages for students and their parents, including:

  • The nurse practitioner has the training and authority to diagnose illness and prescribe medication.
  • Provides convenient, inexpensive care where children already spend most of their day.
  • Overcomes problems of working parents, no transportation, and lack of health insurance.
  • Reduces absenteeism due to illness.

Health Point also operates school-based health centers in the Covington, Erlanger-Elsmere and Boone County school districts.

Health Point is a non-profit primary care medical and dental practice, serving about 28,800 low-income and uninsured patients at health centers in Covington, Latonia, Bellevue, Florence and Nicholasville, Ky.

The Kentucky Literacy Celebration was created by the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD) and First Lady Jane Beshear. Established by legislation in 1998, CCLD’s mission is to promote literacy and address the diverse needs of all learners through professional development for Kentucky educators and research that informs policy and practice. The celebration intends to highlight literacy in Kentucky, celebrate the accomplishments and focus on the challenges we still face as a state.

Dayton Schools will be highlighting their outstanding gains in reading over the past several years.

Lincoln Elementary Earns AdvancED Accreditation

Congratulations to our Lincoln Elementary staff, students, parents, and community on receiving Accreditation from AdvaneEd. This accreditation process was completed yesterday.

Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance deve...loped more than 100 years ago by American universities and secondary schools, and designed primarily to distinguish schools adhering to a set of educational standards. The accreditation process is also known in terms of its ability to effectively drive student performance and continuous improvement in education. While accreditation is a set of rigorous protocols and research-based processes for evaluating an institution’s organizational effectiveness, it is far more than that. Today accreditation examines the whole institution—the programs, the cultural context, the community of stakeholders—to determine how well the parts work together to meet the needs of students.

Accreditation is a significant achievement pronouncing an institution’s quality of education, as well as a remarkably enriching process for the institutions recognizing the tremendous competitive and performance gains it affords.
The GROWTH occurring at Lincoln Elementary has been AMAZING! The school's state ranking has grown from being 628 out of 706 elementary schools in the state to being ranked 271 out of 730 elementary schools. Our MAP scores are also up in reading and math! Student attendance is also improving every year! I sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts to provide the very best for our students. They deserve it!
Way to GROW Little Devils!

Learning about Cultures

Mrs. Wiggins' first grade class has been learning about the arts from West Africa in their Art classes. They used paper plates and paint to create African plate necklaces as an example of functional art.
