Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias!

 
Dayton Independent school cafeterias are meeting tough new federal nutrition standards for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in School Year 2013 -2014 school breakfast will meet additional standards as the lunch program underwent changes last year

School Nutrition provides breakfast and lunch meals during the school day. Our menu choices are selected to be nurtritionally balanced as possible and meet or exceed the U. S. Department of Agriculture dietary standards. These guidelines require school lunches to average no more than 30 percent calories from fat and no more that 10 percent calories from saturated fat in a one-week period. In addition, lunches must provide an average of one-third of the key nutrients including protein, Vitamins A and C, calcium and iron and calories recomended daily for children.

Breakfast menus must meet the same restrictions for calories from fat as lunches. However, breakfast menus provide an average of one-quarter of the key nutrients and calories recommended daily for children.

Nutrional guidelines for ala carte items offered in our cafeterias also must meet nutritional standards which are no more than 8 grams of fat per serving, no more than 30% of calories from fat and no more than 35% added sugar by weight. Beverages must be no more that 10 grams of sugar per serving,100% fruit juice, unflavored, non-carbonated water, flavored unsweetened water and 2%, 1%, skim white and flavored milk.
